The Lambda Literary Award has just sidelined itself as an arbiter of good GLBTQ fiction.

The Lambda Literary Foundation has decided that, instead of opposing discrimination, it will promote it by deciding that the sexual orientation of the AUTHOR should be taken into account in the doling out of awards. If you submit, you're automatically presumed to be GLBTQ.

I don't care who wrote the book. I just want it to be a good book.

Please do not whine about discrimination and then discriminate in your own awards. Until this policy is removed, I am taking the Lambda Literary Foundation as I seriously as I take the Westboro Baptist Church. i.e. not at all.

To my mind, anyone who wins a Lambda this year should think long and hard about how this "speshul snowflake positive discrimination" influenced the decision. Because personally, up for an award that rewards who I sleep with and not what I've written is no award at all.

I'm going to avoid the writing of people who submit to the Lambdas. Because to me, it's saying "My writing is not good enough to stand up by itself for a MERIT based award."

Sorry, I spend my money on books that can stand up on their own two feet. And on authors who recognise that an award based on discrimination is no award at all.

ETA: A lot of people seem to be coming here from linkspam and rants about me. Fair nuff, this is an unflocked post. If you come here and talk rationally -- fine. You start out by insulting me and vilifying me, instant ban. Clear enough? I'm not wandering around the LJ's of people I disagree with dropping bitchy remarks and insulting them on a personal level and I find it quite pathetic that that is the sort of support that this discussion is getting. Because if you want to make a point, insults and inchoate rage are probably not the way to go. And definitely not something I have any wish to engage with.

As this is still going on, and as i am now on a work thing, I'm freezing this post and the followup posts. I just want to say thank you to the people who have just replied in a calm manner. I will get back to you each individually over PM in the next few weeks.
